Who Needs a Second COVID-19 Vaccine Booster?
Recently the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded eligibility for another mRNA booster (Pfizer or Moderna) to increase protection against severe COVID-19 illness. NorthBay Health Medical Director Seth Kaufman, M.D., recommends vaccinations for all patients and boosters for eligible patients.
“Public health experts urge those who are most at risk to get the second booster. Dr. Kaufman says, “boosters are safe and increase protection from COVID-19. A second booster is especially important for those who are immunosuppressed, those age 65 and older, and those 50 and older with underlying conditions. These patients will likely benefit from the additional boosting.”

Who can get a second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine?
At this time, you are eligible for a second COVID-19 vaccine booster if it’s been four months since your first booster AND you are:
- Age 50 and older
- Age 12 and older and moderately or severely immunocompromised
- Age 18–49 and previously received a primary and booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Is the second booster dose one or two shots?
The second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is a single shot — the same as the first booster dose vaccine.
If I qualify, do I have to wait a certain amount of time after I complete my last COVID-19 vaccination?
The CDC recommends waiting at least four months following the completion of the first booster vaccine. This includes patients who are immunocompromised. Patients eligible for a second COVID booster can schedule appointments at Myturn.ca.gov.
