Medicare Made Clear

Whether you’re just starting out on Medicare or looking to make a change, Medicare plan choices can be overwhelming. For example, Medicare has four parts to it, and each part covers different types of medical expenses and has deductibles. Most people purchase insurance to accompany their Original Medicare and that can be a daunting task as well, figuring out whether a Medicare Supplement (aka Medi-Gap) or a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan best fits your health care needs.

Medicare Advantage plans have been around for a long time and are offered by private insurance companies that are contracted by Medicare. These plans provide all the same benefits as Original Medicare and in many cases offer added-value benefits such for eyeglasses, hearing aids and more. In Solano County, there are low-cost monthly premium plans that allow you to continue to see your NorthBay providers. Be sure you understand the limitations of a MA plan; for example, all will have some limitations as to the provider network and who you can see for preplanned services.

Whatever your choice, it’s important to review your healthcare needs and Medicare options before choosing your coverage. For those wanting to select or change their MA plan, now until Dec. 7 is the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) to choose your plan. To help you make an informed decision, NorthBay Health partners with an insurance broker to host a free monthly virtual webinar, "Medicare 101 & Your Options". In the webinar, we review the parts of Original Medicare and your health insurance options and how they all work together.
