Summer Smoothies to Beat the Heat

Try sneaking some vegetables into your smoothie to increase the health value of your summer treat.

To keep cool in the summer sun, consider a refreshing smoothie that will also check off some boxes on your to-do list for better health.

Are smoothies a clever way to sneak more fruits and veggies into your diet? Check. A filling way to kick off your day? Check. How about a healthy energy boost with superfoods and milk alternatives? Check!

Here are three smoothie recipes that will help you hit your health goals and more, according to Laura O’Mary, clinical dietitian for NorthBay Health. When Laura puts one together for herself, she always tries to add a handful of mild-tasting greens such as spinach.

“It adds tons of nutrients and does not change the flavor of the smoothie, only the color,” said Laura. “Also, it’s important to add a source of protein, such as a tablespoon of almond butter, a scoop of protein powder or plain Greek yogurt. For an extra boost of fiber, add a teaspoon of ground flaxseed!”

Strawberry season is in full swing, and this healthy strawberry green tea smoothie combines fresh strawberries, green tea and lime juice to create a balanced and refreshing drink packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants.

We know kale is good for us, but how can we best work it into our diets? This green dream smoothie is a creamy drink that also includes dates, if you desire.

Looking for a simple yet filling breakfast option? Consider the yogurt berry parfait smoothie. It offers antioxidant-rich blueberries and strawberries combined with crunchy chia seeds, unsweetened almond milk and creamy yogurt.
