A Lucky Draw at Jubilee

When Terryl Buntrock was told that she had won a brand-new car in the Solano Wine & Food Jubilee raffle, she thought it had to be a joke.

"I never win anything!" she laughed.

"I've been buying Jubilee and raffle tickets to support NorthBay's Hospice & Bereavement programs for 20 years because I believe in the programs so much," she explained.

Winning something was not on her radar.

This year, Terryl and her husband, Wayne Walker, M.D., anesthesiologist for NorthBay Health, knew they were going to miss the May 19 event because they'd be out of the country on vacation. So, she bought three raffle tickets several weeks in advance and then forgot all about it.

That's why, when she saw an email notification that she was the grand prize winner, she immediately thought it was a hoax.

After recuperating from the shock, Terryl realized that she didn't really need a new car, so the couple decided the next best thing would be to gift it their daughter, Laura, a recent veterinary school graduate living in Georgia.

They tried to keep the gift a happy secret but soon realized they were going to need to let Laura in on the news, since she should be the one to pick out the car - either a 2018 Mazda3 hatchback, Nissan Altima, Kia Optima, Hyundai Sonata or Buick Verano, courtesy of Rami Yanni, of Wise Auto Group.

Laura selected the Mazda and, working with Tracy Mitchell, marketing manager for Wise Auto Group, and the sales team at Mazda of Vacaville, arrangements were made to have the car shipped to Georgia.

The timing of the gift couldn't be better for Laura and her fiance, Terryl added.

"They are currently a one-car family with a tremendous student loan debt hanging over their heads, so this appears to be a win-win for all the parties concerned!

"I really cannot thank NorthBay Health Foundation and the Wise Auto Group team enough for the patience and expertise exhibited in making what could have been a complicated (and perhaps non-negotiable) transfer a reality," Terryl noted.

"I sure wish I could be there to see Laura's face when this car gets there," she added, shortly after officially receiving the keys. "It's just beautiful."

And, as fate would have it, the car is also a shade of NorthBay blue.
