Walter Berkheimer, MD
I had an interest in pediatrics and newborn care even in my early medical school years, and have always enjoyed being around children, both on and off the job. I've been involved for many years with youth activities, and am a parent to six and a grandparent to six.
I came to NorthBay as a staff neonatologist in 1996, while I was also working as director of newborn services at David Grant Medical Center.
When working with children, I have an opportunity to encourage them to consider developing good, long-term health habits. And, as a neonatologist, I have an opportunity to develop long-term relationships with the families of our NICU babies. Some are with us for a couple of days, others for eight or 12 weeks. It's an excellent opportunity to educate parents on healthy practices to help their children stay healthy as they grow up.
When not at NorthBay, I've also provided neonatal resuscitation training to healthcare workers in Brazil and Nigeria.
