Bike-To-Work Day Approaches

April 27, 2016

Bike to work day is approaching. Thursday May 12 is the day set aside for finding alternative methods of getting to and from work: Specifically bicycling but anything other than a car is a winner.

NorthBay Healthcare supports this event in conjunction with the Solano Transportation Authority by providing two Energizer Stations. One is located near NorthBay Medical Center at the juncture of the bikeway and Pennsylvania Avenue. The other is in Vacaville, near VacaValley Hospital at Ulatis and Allison Drives.

Riders can drop by any of 15 Energizer Stations in Solano County and receive a free gift bag as well as snacks. Riders are encouraged to check in and register with their contact information to receive updates on bike-to-work topics.

Why bike to work? If you live within a reasonable distance, biking to work offers numerous benefits. One that you may not have thought of is that bike riders do not have to worry about finding a parking place.

For NorthBay employees, parking a car at the Fairfield hospital campus can be a challenge during the ongoing construction project. NorthBay has purchased bicycle lockers for employees to use and provides places for employees to shower and or just change clothes. At the VacaValley Hospital campus NorthBay also provides enclosed safe and secure bike cages.

Check with your employer to see what options your company may provide for you to bike to work. If you know that where to park your bike and have a convenient place to shower or just change your clothes, what is stopping you from biking to work?

I know that some people do not feel safe biking to work. If you ride through an area where you do not feel comfortable, you may be able to recruit a partner who could ride with you. If you do not feel comfortable riding in traffic, adult cycling classes are offered that provide you with the skills enabling you to ride safely in traffic.

Here are some more benefits to leaving your car at home:

  • Leaving your car behind saves you money and lengthens the lifespan of your car. Short trips are hard on cars. If you commute 20 miles per week by bike you can save $1,000 per year.
  • Physical activity similar to spending time in a gym and improves your health and lengthens your lifespan.
  • Improves your quality of life and work. You arrive to work with a better attitude and the same goes for your ride home.
